The pitting of these high pressure turbine blades and the shroud was caused by a leaking isolation valve combined with incorrect steam chemistry. We investigated this problem and recommended changes to protect the steam turbines, condensers and pipework.

Silica in steam We investigated the cause of chemical deposits/fouling on these blades and discs. We then recommended changes in plant operation to avoid a repetition and its consequences.
The low alloy steel components in this low pressure turbine sufferred scalloping and rusting. We investigated this incident and discovered the erosion-corrosion being caused by the passage of high velocity wet steam. The chemistry of the wet steam had been adversely affected by the plant operators making a small change to the boiler water chemistry.
